These are Bowers & Wilkins P5 headphones. Over all, they are wonderful headphones and I love them very much. So much that I have used them almost everyday for 3 years. Unfortunately B&W has lost any future business from me. You see, both of the cords that came with my headphones self-destructed due to use of low quality glue which melted and allows for things like this to happen due to the fragile plastic B&W uses. This also happened with the other cord but I dismissed it as an exception, not the rule.

Kinja'd!!!

However what awaited me when I went to remove this cord was something even more amazing. The same weak glue that was used on the connecter was also used on the earpads and has caused my ear pads to piss glue all over the interior of my headphones.

Kinja'd!!!

By this point I'm on the phone with B&W, who inform me that because my $300 headphones are 3 years and not 2 years old they will not replace my headphones without me playing $120. I'm sorry B&W, but when I pay $300 damn dollars for headphones I expect for them to not be built like shit.

Isn't B&W British? Because damn there's your problem.

This makes me sad. My wife has a pair of P5s, which I covet dearly, and I was thinking of buying the P7s. I haven't come across anything that quite compares.

I'm not normally the kind of person to spend several hundred dollars on headphones, but were it my money, I'd go Beyerdynamic for the replacement set.

Conversely, Sennheiser will pretty much replace/repair just about anything you send in with their name on it, regardless of age or lack of proof of purchase.

Which is exactly why I'll be replacing them with Sennheiser Momentums (over ear) headphones.

Well I saved up and I consider it a good investment. Being a student, I spend a good amount of time with headphones on studying.

Yup, right now I listen with a slightly modified pair of series 1 Skullcandy Ink'd earbuds. A bit bass-heavy and the highs are slightly fuzzy, but it's not bad for $20 and a day's worth of soldering and dremeling.

My other listenings are Sennheiser HD201s I got for $20 and then made single-removable cable with a soldering iron and 2.5mm receptacle, as well as toning down the harsh highs and trying to give it some bass with acoustic foam and a dremel tool. They're not the most comfortable but I love the sound.

I also have a pair of Logitech G35 7.1 simulated surround sound gaming headphones that my friend gave me after destroying them during an... enthusiastic gaming match. Soldered the left cup back on and used copious amounts of hot glue to hold it all back together. Very fragile, but works well and is has good audio quality for gaming (extremely punchy/loud bass that manages to not be overbearing, mids are a bit muffled but highs are clear).

Not sure why I'm mentioning all this, but I long for the day I can get something that's actual quality, even if it's just ATH-M50x.

And they still stock replacement pads for pretty much every headphone they ever made.

Have you tried the Audio Technica ATH-M50's? I bought a pair when the M50x's first came out and I love them.

Best headphones I have found under $200, and I actually like them more than the Sennheiser HD600's that we use in the studio — though those have a much flatter frequency band.

if you are just going to toss em I will buy them from you and fix em. my 10year old AKG could be retired

Eh they seem a bit big. Also how many ohms are they? I'm looking at buying Some Sennhisers Momentums because of their low 16 Ohm count so they can easily be powered by a smartphone.

No, they still work. I'll probobly eventually pay the $150 and get a new set but relegate them to indoor use only as it was probobly the absurd Louisiana heat that did in the glue. However I am going to purchase a set of sennhiser momentums to use as my new outside headphones.

They are 38 ohms, but I use them with my phone and tablet and they power them just fine.

They really aren't big like ridiculous DJ cans, but they aren't exactly small either. Probably average for over ear headphones. The best part about these is that they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. I actually fall asleep with them on all the time. Most headphones tend to give me a headache after wearing them for long periods of time (or short with some), but these I can wear for hours and be perfectly fine.

I've been using them for mixing and mastering an album in conjunction with the HD600's and I much prefer the M50's.

thanks for the heads up.

I was debating between these (or the P3s) and the new ones Sennheiser just came out with.

I already have a lesser Sennheiser and they've held up great, so looks like I'm sticking with them.

Hi,

I feel sorry for that, and to be frank I had to same issue.

Quite disappointed, I contacted the support from my country (Switzerland), within one day someone replied and apologized for that issue — which is apparently plaguing only the first series — before offering to exchange them free of charge with a brand new pair of P5 *second* generation.

They did not ask for anything, I sent my cans in an envelope without any document or cable whatsoever and 5 days later I received the promised P5 series 2.

Needless to say that I’m quite glad with that solution. Maybe you can try to do the same thing as well.

Best,
